Why Commercial Guava Farming?
Guava is one of India's most commercially viable fruit crops. With a short gestation period, high yield potential and growing urban demand for red-flesh varieties, it offers farmers one of the best returns per hectare among fruit crops.
At Jarvi Seeds & Nursery, we have spent over a decade developing rootstock technology specifically for Indian commercial farming conditions — resulting in varieties that outperform conventional guava in yield, fruit weight and heat tolerance.
Choosing the Right Variety
The most critical decision in commercial guava farming is variety selection. Conventional white-flesh guava is widely available but commands lower market prices. Deep red-flesh varieties — like Jarvi Red and Jarvi Red-1 — consistently fetch higher prices in urban markets and export channels.
Key factors to consider when choosing a variety:
- Heat tolerance: If your region sees temperatures above 34°C, choose Jarvi Red-1 which tolerates up to 45°C with no fruit-setting issues.
- Market access: For premium urban markets, deep red-flesh varieties command ₹60–100/kg wholesale.
- Farm size: Both varieties are suitable for small (1 acre) to large (50+ acre) commercial plantations.
Soil Preparation
Guava thrives in well-drained, sandy loam to clay loam soils with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5. Before planting:
- Deep plough the land 2–3 times to break hardpan layers
- Add organic matter — FYM at 20–25 tonnes/hectare
- Test soil pH and correct with lime if below 5.5
- Ensure good drainage — waterlogging is the biggest enemy of guava
Planting Density and Layout
Standard planting density for commercial guava is 6m × 6m (277 plants/hectare). For high-density orchards, reduce to 5m × 4m (500 plants/hectare). Higher density increases early yield but requires more intensive management.
Irrigation
Drip irrigation is strongly recommended for commercial guava farming. It reduces water usage by 40–50% compared to flood irrigation and allows fertigation — delivering nutrients directly to the root zone.
Critical irrigation periods: flowering, fruit development and summer months.
Expected Returns
With Jarvi Red or Jarvi Red-1 varieties:
- Year 1–2: Establishment phase, minimal yield
- Year 3 onwards: 55–60 tonnes/hectare average yield
- 3 harvests per year with proper management
- Wholesale price: ₹25–100/kg depending on season and market
A 5-acre Jarvi Red orchard at peak yield can generate ₹10–20 lakh annually in gross revenue.
