5 Common Mistakes in Commercial Guava Farming — and How to Avoid Them

Mistake 1 — Choosing the Wrong Variety for Your Climate

The single biggest yield killer is planting a variety not suited to your local temperature range. Conventional guava and Jarvi Red both struggle with fruit setting above 34°C. If your farm regularly sees 40°C+ summers — which is most of northern and western India — you will see dramatically reduced fruit set during peak summer.

Fix: Choose Jarvi Red-1 for any region with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 34°C. It tolerates up to 45°C with no fruit-setting issues.

Mistake 2 — Ignoring Soil Drainage

Guava is highly sensitive to waterlogging. Even 48 hours of standing water can cause root rot and tree death. Many farmers learn this only after losing trees during monsoon.

Fix: Before planting, audit the natural drainage of your land. Create raised bed or raised mound planting if needed. Install drainage channels at the orchard boundary.

Mistake 3 — Under-Irrigating During Fruit Development

Many farmers reduce irrigation after fruit set, assuming the hard work is done. Water stress during fruit development causes fruit cracking, premature drop and smaller fruit size — directly reducing your realised price at market.

Fix: Maintain consistent soil moisture from fruit set to 2 weeks before harvest. Drip irrigation with a timer makes this manageable even on large orchards.

Mistake 4 — Skipping the Third Harvest

One of the biggest advantages of Jarvi Red varieties is 3 harvests per year. Many farmers only realise 2, either because of poor crop regulation or by missing the signal for the third flowering cycle.

Fix: Follow a proper crop regulation schedule — controlled stress irrigation at the right time triggers the third flowering cycle. Contact us for a crop calendar specific to your region.

Mistake 5 — Buying Saplings from Unverified Sources

The guava sapling market in India has a significant counterfeit problem. Many nurseries sell generic or mislabelled saplings under premium variety names — including Jarvi Red. Farmers only discover the difference after 2–3 years when yields and fruit quality disappoint.

Fix: Buy only from the source nursery with verifiable history. Jarvi Seeds & Nursery has been developing and growing these varieties since 2008 in Bharadiya, Bharuch. Every sapling comes directly from us. Call +91 81283 14911 to order.
